Mark’s favourite pieces since we began performing together, plus a special commission & premiere of a new quartet by the ECSQ’s very own Emily Kennedy to celebrate our 5 year anniversary!
“When I first heard “Carrot Revolution” my jaw dropped. The percussive elements, the intense rhythmic unisons, and the splash of rock and roll make this piece riveting to listen to and an absolute blast to play. I always show it to my students if they ever think that classical music is ‘boring.’
I may be biased, but Emily Kennedy is one of my favourite composers. She’s been writing for some other projects, like our friends the SJSQ, India Gailey, and Michael Duguay. We figured it would be great, for our fifth anniversary as a group, for Emily to write a piece for us. I think our Philip Glass quartet 5 tour was a really important one for us. I think it let us tap into something special. The piece has a minimalist repetitiveness, but also an emotional depth. I think tapping into that was a really formative part of our growth as a group.”
